A lip flip is one of the quickest, most subtle lip treatments we offer. Instead of adding filler, we place a tiny amount of Botox into the orbicularis oris, the ring of muscle around your mouth, just above the upper lip line. When that muscle relaxes slightly, the upper lip gently "flips" upward and outward. More of the pink part of your lip shows, especially when you smile, so the upper lip looks fuller even though nothing has been added.
It's a favorite for clients who feel their upper lip "disappears" when they smile, who want a softer pout without changing the shape or size of their lips, or who are curious about lip enhancement but not ready for filler. How a lip flip works, and how many units you need
The muscle behind a thin-looking upper lip
Every time you smile, talk or sip, the orbicularis oris contracts and pulls the upper lip inward and up toward the teeth. In some people that pull is strong enough to tuck the lip in, which makes it look thinner or creates a "gummy" smile. Relaxing just the edge of the muscle softens the pull, so the lip sits a little more forward and outward.
How many units is a lip flip?
Most lip flips use 4–6 units of Botox, placed in a few tiny injections along the upper lip border (and sometimes the lower lip). That's a very small dose compared with the 20 or more units commonly used for forehead or frown lines, which is why the effect is so subtle and natural. Your injector may adjust slightly for your lip size, muscle strength and goals, but we always start conservatively. You can come back for a touch more; you can't take away too much.

Can you combine a lip flip and lip filler?
Yes, and many clients do. A lip flip shows more of the upper lip, while a small amount of filler adds hydration and shape, so you get a fuller look with less filler than you'd need on its own. It's also a great way to "test drive" lip enhancement: many of our clients start with a lip flip, love the change, and decide later whether they want the extra volume of filler.
Who is a good candidate for a lip flip?
A lip flip is ideal if you:

Many clients schedule a refresh every two to three months, or time it before weddings, vacations and photos.
What does it feel like afterward?
For the first several days your upper lip may feel slightly different: drinking through a straw, whistling or saying certain sounds can take a little extra effort. That's normal, mild and temporary, and it's one reason we keep the dose conservative. Tiny injection marks fade within an hour or two.

- Don't rub, massage or press on your lips that day
- Skip strenuous exercise, saunas and hot yoga for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol for the rest of the day to minimize bruising
